Help for MIME Types
Use this form to create or modify a list of file extensions that you want to bind to
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) content types/subtypes.
MIME Types
File contents are packaged using methods defined by the MIME extension to the Internet mail standard.
You can use a list to associate file extensions with MIME types/subtypes.
The server considers any file with an extension matching an entry in the list to be
packaged with the associated MIME type/subtype.
There are two special extension patterns you can include in the list:
-
- *.* matches all file names that contain a period and have not been matched by other
entries in the list
-
- * matches all file names that do not contain a period and have not been matched by
other entries in the list
You can also define whether you want your server to differentiate between upper-case and lower-case
letters on fine extensions.
- If you do not want the server to differentiate between upper-case and lower-case letters on file
extensions, select the Not case sensitive button.
If you want the server to differentiate between upper-case and lower-case letters on file extensions,
select the Case sensitive button.
Note: The setting for case sensitivity applies to all extensions. If you change the setting
on this form, the change also applies to the MIME Encoding form and the Languages form.
- If you want to use the changes you make to the form, select the Apply button.
If you want to go back to the values that were on the form before you made changes, select the
Reset button.
- Select either the Insert before or Insert after button.
- Select an Index number.
Your choices in steps 1 and 2 indicate the position you want the new entry to have in the list.
For example, if you select Insert before and Index 2,
the new entry will be second in the list. If you select Insert after and
Index 4, the new entry will be fifth in the list.
- Create the new entry by filling in the following fields:
- Extension - the file extension you want to associate with a MIME type/subtype.
Include the leading period with the extension.
- Content Type/Subtype - the MIME type/subtype you want to bind to the extension.
- Encoding - the MIME type encoding is usually 8bit, 7bit, or binary.
- Rating - a number between 0.1 and 1.0 that indicates the relative value of the MIME type. The server uses the rating when there are multiple representations of a file to choose from. The server selects the file with the extension associated with the highest Rating value. Use of this field is optional.
- Character set - the name of a character set you want to associate with text documents that match the extension you are binding to a type/subtype. For the documents that you assign a character set to, the server tells client browsers what character set to use when displaying the document. Use of this field is optional.
- If you want to use the changes you make to the form, select the Apply button. If you want to go back to the values that were on the form before you made changes, select the Reset button.
- Select the Replace button.
- Select the Index number of the entry you want to replace.

- Rating - a number between 0.1 and 1.0 that indicates the relative value of the MIME type. The server uses the rating
